Some letters and words about physics and maths

About

Hello! I’m Laura – a theoretical physicist studying for my PhD at the University of Edinburgh. I work in scattering amplitudes, which involves developing mathematical methods to calculate the probability of some particle scattering occurring in a particle collider, such as the Large Hadron Collider.

I hope this website will be a place to learn about all sorts of wonderful and weird goings on in theoretical physics and mathematics today. Often learning is thought of as a chore. I hope to prove otherwise. The aim is for most posts to be accessible to those with a keen interest in maths and physics, but not necessarily a university background. There might be the occasional integral and I won’t shy away from equations, but I will do my best to explain things as I go. Please do send me feedback if you feel that a particular concept has been mentioned without enough context!

I also want to give you a glimpse behind the curtain of academia. With global attitudes trending towards mistrust of scientists, it’s only fair that we show you what we actually do.

I am passionate about accessible science and maths communication. I would love to get involved with physics/maths communication opportunities in Scotland; please get in contact at s2718324@ed.ac.uk.
